How to pick a camp spot before it gets dark

Stop while you can still see. Look for ground that drains, a little out of the wind, and far enough from the water that a rise in the night does not reach the beds.

Trees help until a dead one hangs over the tarp. Check for that, for an animal trail through the middle of camp, and for grass the horses can use without standing in the kitchen.
